Q: ようやく「牧場物語２」が完成したわけですが、開発期間はどのくらいだったんですか？

Q: "Now that Bokujou Monogatari 2 is finally finished, how long did it take to develop?"

和田: 実際に開発を始めたのがおととしの６月ぐらいなので、約１年半ですね。畑を耕して、種をまいてといった基本システムは過去のもの（ＳＦＣ版、ＧＢ版）を踏襲する予定だったので、まったくゼロからのスタートということではなかったですけど。プログラムの山楯くんとシナリオの宮越くんを中心に、あるていど基本部分を作り終わった時点で、どういう作品に仕上げていこうかと、考えていました。

Wada: "We actually started development in June of last year, so it's been about a year and a half. We planned to follow the basic system of plowing the fields and planting seeds from the past (SFC and GB versions), so it wasn't like we were starting from scratch. I was thinking about what kind of work I wanted to make once I had finished creating some of the basic parts of the game, mainly with Yamatate (programmer) and Miyakoshi (scenario)."

Q: ハードがＮ６４になって、いろいろできることが増えたと思うんですが？

Q: "Now that the hardware is the N64, were there more things that you could do?"

和田: いやあ、Ｎ６４をもってしても、いっぱいあったやりたいことを表現しきれなかったですね。Ｎ６４で表現力は格段に上がりました。ひとつひとつのキャラも大きくできますし、動きのパターンなんかもかなり入れられますしね。でもそのために、やりたいことがどんどん増えちゃって……。やりたいアイデアの３割くらいが実現できたという感じでしょうか。３割って、野球の打率としてはいいほうなんですけどね。
山楯：プログラマー的にいうと、むちゃなアイデアというものも多かったんですが、でも、その試行錯誤のおかげで、Ｎ６４でのゲーム開発のおもしろさや作りがいのあるクセがわかってきました。『牧場２』の開発には生かしきれなかったけど、そのノウハウはたまりましたね。
和田：だからもう一度『牧場物語』を作らせてほしいって感じがありますね。そうすれば、もっとすごいアイデアが入れられそうです。まあ、それを実現しようとすれば苦労するのはみんなで、ぼくはいろいろいうだけですけど（笑)。みんながんばってね（笑)。

Wada: "Well, even with the N64, there were still many things that weren't able to come to fruition. The expressiveness increased dramatically due to the new hardware. You can make larger characters, and also add a lot of movement patterns. But because of that, the number of things I wanted to do also increased...I think we've achieved about 30% of what I wanted to do. 30% is a good batting average for baseball."
Yamatate: "From a programmer's point of view, many of the ideas were outlandish, but, thanks to trial and error, I was able to understand the fun and challenging nature of game development on the N64. I didn't get to utilize the 64's full capacity during the development of the game, but I did acquire a lot of know-how."
Wada: "That's why I feel like I want them to let me make another Bokujou Monogatari again. That way, I'll be able to add even more great ideas. Well, we're all going to have a hard time if we try to make that happen, I'm just speaking freely (laughs). [To staff] Good luck, everyone! (laughs)"

Q: 「牧場物語２」では生命について考えさせられるイベントが多いように思うんですか……。

Q: "Are there a lot of events in the game that make you contemplate life...?"

和田：ＲＰＧで、シナリオの都合上誰かが死ぬことって多いですよね。誰かが犠牲になってみんなを助けるみたいな。その場では展開が見えていても泣けることもあるんですけど、でも本当の死ってそんなものじゃないと思うんですよ。
宮越：人が死ぬって、ある意味当たり前のことなんです。今回、エリィのおばあさんが死ぬイベントがあるんですが、発生条件が主人公とおばあさんの友好度が上がることなんです。友好度が上げると人が死ぬって、おかしいかもしれませんが、「ああ、なかよくなれたからこそ、その人の最期に立ち会えたんだ。…よかった」みたいなことが描ければと。もちろん、その死に物語的な必然性があるわけじゃないんですが。
和田：今回の『牧場２』には、人が生きていることじたいがスゴイことで、生命と自然に感謝すような意味合いのイベントが多いです。誰がバシバシ死ぬような、ハデに物語を演出するイベントはないですか、そのぶん自然で、ふつうに生命の尊さを考えてもらえると思います。
宮越：ゲーム中の選択肢も「こうしないといけない」という攻略法みたいなものはなくて、自分の感じたように選んでいいようになっているんです。花の芽町の主人になったつもりで、生きたいように生きて、日常を楽しんでください。

Wada: "In RPGs, there are many times where a person dies for the sake of the story. Like someone sacrificing themselves to save everyone. There have been times where I'll cry, even if I see it unfolding right then and there, but I don't think that real death is like that."
Miyakoshi: "People die, that's normal. This time, there's an event in which Elly's grandmother passes away, a scenario which occurs only after the Hero and the grandmother become friends. It might seem strange for someone to pass away after you've just become their friend, but I wanted to portray something like, 'Oh, I was able to be there in their final moments, because we were friends...I'm glad.' Of course, there's no narrative inevitability to that death."
Wada: "There are many events in Bokujou Monogatari 2 that are meant to give thanks to life and nature, because it's amazing to be alive. There are no events that dramatize the story, like many people dying, but I believe that it will make people think about how precious life is in general, in a natural way."
Miyakoshi: "There is no "have-to-do" strategy for the choices you make in the game, so you can choose what you feel is right. Think of yourself as the master of Flowerbud Village, living the way you want to live, and enjoy your everyday life."

和田：現実の世界でも、日常的な生活のなかでふと感じるしあわせがあります。それは『牧場２』のなかで牛の世話をしたり、作物を収穫したりして感じるしあわせと同じで、そんなにスゴイものではないけど、価値のあるしあわせだと思うんです。だからみなさんも『牧場２』のなかに、そして自分の生活のなかに、自分なりのしあわせを見つけてください。

Wada: "Even in the real world, there is a kind of happiness that we unexpectedly feel in our daily lives. It's the same happiness you feel when you take care of crops and cows in Bokujou Monogatari 2. It's not profound, but I think it's a worthwhile kind of happiness. So we hope you will find happiness in Bokujou Monogatari 2, and in your own life."
